This map shows the various groundwater resources in Africa, along with their rate of recharge. In Africa, groundwater is an important source of freshwater and it is essential to supplement the surface water resources in a region that is increasingly affected by recurring drought. Africa is endowed with large and often under-utilized aquifer resources, predominantly in the large shared subregional sedimentary systems of the Sahara and Central and Southern Africa. There are also significant shared coastal aquifer resources that supply the large urban populations concentrated in rapidly growing coastal areas.Source: UNEP 2010
